Nicholas Hune-Brown, 2019 Magazine Award Winner

Nicholas Hune-Brown is a Toronto-based magazine journalist who has been published in places like Toronto Life, Slate, The Walrus, The Guardian, Hazlitt, Reader’s Digest, The Believer, Chatelaine, The Globe and Mail, and The Toronto Star. He has won multiple National Magazine Awards, with more than a dozen nominations, and his work appeared in the anthology Best Canadian Essays in both 2009 and 2011.

Nicholas' winning submission is entitled "No Fixed Address". The article was published in the January 21, 2019 edition of Toronto Life. "No Fixed Address" is an unblinking look at the hard reality of the homelessness crisis in Toronto. In researching the article Hune-Brown spoke with city employees tasked with managing the homeless population and met numerous people living on the street to help understand the root causes and history of homelessness in the city.

Nicholas writes long-form, narrative journalism on a wide range of topics - an investigative report into Toronto’s Chinese-language newspapers, an in-depth look at the lives of captive elephants, a feature on homelessness in Toronto, profiles of politicians, artists, and ordinary Canadians. He is also the features editor at TheLocal.to, a magazine devoted to health and social issues in Toronto.
