Call for Submissions and Competition Guidelines for Magazine Award


Eligibility Requirements For All Magazine Award Submissions:

Residency

Applicant must be a continuing resident of Canada and at the date of application lived in Canada for the last twelve months.

70% Freelancer Requirement

Applicant must be working a minimum of seventy per cent of their work time as a self-employed freelance writer.

Online Only Publication

Submissions that are to be published on the Internet will be accepted as long as the writer meets all other applicable eligibility requirements of the Call for Submissions.

Self-Publication Only

Submissions that are to be only self-published are not eligible.

Publicity/Media

Award winners are asked to agree to make a considered effort to acknowledge this prize upon publication and to acknowledge the Dave Greber Freelance Writing Awards in the published work and when interviewed by media about the winning submission.

Timing of Publication & Proof of Publishing Contract

Because of the timing of publication for magazine articles in the publishing process, two different options for magazine submissions are accepted. To be eligible for the 2017 competition, applicant must be submit according to the requirements of one of the two following options:

Option A - Unpublished Magazine Article

Submission Requirements

The following submission requirements apply for unpublished magazine articles:

  1. For the 2017 competition, if article will not be published until after the closing date of the competition, Friday June 16, 2017, writer must be working on completion for publication of a contracted English language magazine article (non-fiction).
  2. Applicant must submit proof of a publishing contract and either a draft of the article or a copy of the magazine proposal sent to the publishers.
  3. Articles and accompanying documentation can be sent either by regular mail or in PDF files.
  4. If submitting by regular mail:
    There should be no identifying information on the draft or proposal other than the title. Include five copies of either the pitch and/ or a draft of the article to be published. A single copy of the contract will suffice. All eligibility criteria must also be met.
  5. If submitting in PDF format:
    Two files must be submitted. The actual submission is to be sent as one PDF file and is to have only the title of the work and no other identifying information. The second PDF file is to contain the remainder of the required documentation.
  6. To ensure that the files have been received, the writer must send a separate email indicating that the submission is being sent via Internet.
  7. Regardless of how the chapter is submitted, it must be the actual submission of the self-authored article that represents the work being readied for the publication named in the contract or that has been published.
  8. Include a one-page description of your life and work.
  9. Include a list of your published works.
  10. Provide complete contact information (name, address, mailing address, telephone numbers and email address).

Option B - Published Magazine Article

Submission Requirements

The following submission requirements apply for published magazine articles:

  1. For the 2017 competition applicant must have completed an article published any time between Jan 1, 2017 and Friday June 16, 2017 - the closing date of the call for submissions.
  2. Articles and accompanying documentation can be sent either by regular mail or in PDF files.
  3. If submitting by regular mail:
    There should be no identifying information on the draft or proposal other than the title. Include five copies of either the pitch and/ or a draft of the article to be published. A single copy of the contract will suffice. All eligibility criteria must also be met.
  4. If submitting in PDF format:

Awards Conditions:

  1. Awards are made in the form of cash prizes.
  2. One prize will be awarded in the sum of $2000.00. However if there are two entries are of equal merit, an award of $1000.00 will be granted to each writer.

Assessment

If in the opinion of the jury members no work merits an award, no award will be given.
